A Science engagement outreach initiative


On April 4th, the Division of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics (MBHG) at Stellenbosch University in partnership with the UCT-based South African Tuberculosis Vaccine Initiative (SATVI) and the Department of Education, presented a science engagement program at Somerset High School. This project aims to engaged with learners through interactive exhibitions to increase TB awareness within high TB burden areas and combat disease spread and prevalence.


Conceptualisation and launching of this science engagement programme first took place in March 2018. A key focus of the project apart from raising TB awareness includes highlighting the importance of TB research, and destigmatising the disease. Since its launch, the exhibition has reached over 1000 learners within the Cape Winelands district.


The exhibition consists of 5 "stations", each focusing on a different aspect of TB disease. Learners spend 15min at each station, wherein a brief information session followed by Q&A and hands-on activities takes place. The stations are as follows:


1. An introduction to TB

The learners are introduced to the fundamental aspects of TB disease, such as what is TB? what causes TB? how is TB spread? and who can get TB? At this station, the learners are in a large group of about 60 individuals. Once this information session has taken place, learners are split up into groups of 4 (~15 individuals per group) and are


2. Signs & Symptoms


Here, the learners are told about the various signs and symptoms associated with TB infection. Various interactive games, including Crossword puzzles and Snakes & Ladders, are tools used to facilitate knowledge transfer and learner engagement.


3. TB Diagnosis

At this station, learners take part in a mock experiment which mimics a technique used to diagnosis TB infection. This hands-on activity is coupled with an interactive video which explains the importance of seeking medical attention when experiencing the signs and symptoms of TB. In addition, this station aims to raise awareness about animal TB as another source of disease transmission.


4. TB Treatment and Outcomes


Here, learners are informed about the importance of treatment adherence and the challenges encountered when individuals stop treatment before the recommended time frame. This message is presented simply and effectively using a short clip. Learner engagement is encouraged through various games and activities.


5. TB Research/Science



This station was designed to give the impression that the learners are in a laboratory and is aimed at highlighting the role science plays in eliminating the TB burden. At this station, learners perform their own mini DNA extraction experiment and are informed of the various precautions scientists take when working with this pathogen. This station is aimed as inspiring learners to pursue a career in science.


TB remains a global threat to the health and wellness of all individuals. Increased efforts aimed to demystify TB and improve the publics knowledge, attitude and perception towards the disease are thus paramount. This traveling science exhibition provides a platform by which to do so, and affords scientists the opportunity to engage with the public and promote the work they do. MBHG will continue to increase their efforts to interact with local communities and not only teach but learn from community members. United we WILL end TB!
